Open-Minded Couples in Los Angeles: A Lifestyle Guide
Swingers in Los Angeles mostly meet in small private circles rather than big public scenes, partly because the city is so spread out that nobody wants to drive an hour for a night that might not click. Open-minded couples and single women in LA tend to start with a coffee or a drink halfway between their neighbourhoods, then build friendships that move between homes, the beach and weekends in the desert. The city is relaxed about bodies and relationships, and a little more careful about names.
The LA attitude
Los Angeles is easygoing about how people live. In Silver Lake, Echo Park or Venice, an open relationship is a normal topic at a dinner party, and West Hollywood has long been one of the most open places in the US. Wellness culture, therapy and talk about attachment styles are everywhere, so many couples here arrive already fluent in the language of boundaries and check-ins. Books like The Ethical Slut are on plenty of shelves.
That ease comes with one strong habit: privacy. A large share of the city works in or around film, television, music, fashion or social media. Even people who are not famous often have a public profile, a job that depends on reputation, or a client list. So people are friendly but careful. Expect aliases, slow photo sharing, and a preference for meeting people through people.
How people meet here
Distance shapes everything
In LA, the first question is often not "do we like them?" but "where do they live?" A couple in Santa Monica and a single woman in Pasadena can easily be an hour of traffic apart. That is why many first meetings happen somewhere central, or on a weekend afternoon when the freeways are kinder.
A simple line helps: "We're on the Westside. Happy to meet you halfway, maybe somewhere around Culver City or downtown?"
Apps and introductions
Profiles and apps are common starting points, and so are introductions. Many friendships here start because one couple vouches for another. Be clear on your profile that you always meet for a drink first. Our guide to how couples meet other couples goes through the main routes.
Homes with space
Unlike New York, many people in LA have a bit of room: a garden, a pool, a house in the hills or out in the Valley. Private gatherings among friends happen in homes far more than in any club. Hosts usually keep them small, a few couples and single women who already know each other.
Seasons and places nearby
LA's weather is gentle most of the year, so the social calendar follows other rhythms.
- Spring and autumn are the easiest times: warm days, cool evenings, and long dinners outside.
- Summer is hot inland, so people drift towards the coast, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach, and towards sea breezes in the evening.
- Winter is short and mild. A good season for weekends in the desert.
- Award season, roughly January to March, makes many industry people busier and more private than usual.
Couples often travel together on weekends. Palm Springs and Joshua Tree are about two hours away and full of rental houses with pools. Ojai, Santa Barbara and the Central Coast wine country are favourites for slower weekends. San Diego is a short drive south, and Las Vegas is a classic road trip; see our Las Vegas guide for that city. Plenty of LA members also spend time in New York, London or Paris for work.
Legal and cultural notes
Relationships and private gatherings between consenting adults are legal in California. Marrying more than one person is illegal everywhere in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU. This is general information, not legal advice; our guide to whether swinging is legal covers more.
Culturally, LA mixes many communities: Latino families in East LA, Korean families in Koreatown, Armenian families in Glendale, Persian families on the Westside, and transplants from everywhere. For some, the lifestyle is something to keep far from family. Follow the lead of the people you meet, and never mention who you have seen to anyone else.
Practical tips for LA
- Plan the drive home. Agree who is driving, and drink lightly if it is you. A rideshare home is often the better answer.
- Mind your photos. Faces on public profiles are a risk in a city where everyone knows a casting director. Our guide to discretion and privacy has more.
- Ask about phones. Many private nights ask guests to leave phones away. At Rope & Candy nights there are no phones and no cameras at all.
- Be clear about flakiness. LA has a reputation for last-minute cancellations. If you say yes, show up. If you cannot, say so early.
Here is a typical story. Nina and Carlos live in Highland Park. Their first meeting with another couple was a Sunday coffee in Los Feliz, chosen because it was halfway. Six months later the four of them shared a rental in Joshua Tree for a weekend, and introduced each other to friends from Long Beach.
Rope & Candy in Los Angeles
Rope & Candy is a free, invite-only community of open-minded couples and single women in North America and Europe. We do not run events or venues in Los Angeles or anywhere else. When you join, tell us in your email that you live in or travel to LA, and say which part of the city you are in, since that matters more here than almost anywhere. When one of the founders or a Rope & Candy representative is in town, we get in touch for a coffee, a dinner or, sometimes, a small night among friends hosted by members.
If you would like to meet people who take it easy and take care of each other, you are welcome to join Rope & Candy.
Questions people ask
Where do swingers in Los Angeles meet for the first time?
Usually somewhere halfway, because the city is so spread out: a cafe or a quiet restaurant that works for both sides of town. A first meeting is a short drink or coffee, nothing more, and private home gatherings come later.
Is it hard to stay discreet in LA's open-minded scene?
It takes some care, because many people work in film, TV, music or social media and know someone who knows someone. Use an alias, keep photos without faces off public profiles, and share real names only once trust is built.
Does Rope & Candy hold events in Los Angeles?
Not in Los Angeles or anywhere else: we run no public events and no venues. When a founder or a Rope & Candy representative is in Los Angeles, we contact members there for a coffee, a dinner or a small night among friends, hosted by members.
