Open-Minded Couples in Amsterdam: A Lifestyle Guide
Swingers in Amsterdam mostly meet through lifestyle apps, social meet-and-greets and friends of friends, and a first meeting is usually a coffee or a canal walk rather than a big night out. The Dutch are famously open and direct, which makes talking about boundaries easy, but locals keep their private lives private and well away from the tourist crowds. Rope & Candy is a free, invite-only community of open-minded couples and single women, and when someone from our team is in Amsterdam, we get in touch with members here.
The Dutch way: direct, practical, unbothered
The Netherlands was the first country in the world to open civil marriage to same-sex couples, in 2001, and that sense of letting adults run their own lives runs deep. Most Amsterdammers simply do not care what consenting adults do at home.
What visitors notice most is directness. Dutch people tend to say yes, no and maybe without decoration. For open-minded couples, that is a gift. A message like this lands well here:
"We're Anouk and Daan, both late thirties, new to meeting other couples. We'd like a coffee first, nothing else. Saturday morning in Oost?"
Clear, polite, no hints to decode. And if the answer is "no thanks", it really just means no thanks. Our guide on how to say no kindly at a party is useful reading in any language.
How locals tend to meet
Amsterdam is compact, but its open-minded scene stretches across the Randstad, the ring of cities that includes Haarlem, Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam.
- Apps and lifestyle sites. Many profiles, mixed results. Our guide to discreet dating profiles helps keep yours safe.
- Meet-and-greets, social evenings where talking is the whole point.
- Friends of friends, often over dinner in a flat in the Jordaan, De Pijp or Westerpark.
- The expat crowd. Amsterdam has many international residents, English works everywhere, and plenty of couples are new to the city themselves.
Take Sophie and Ruben, an invented couple who live across the IJ in Noord. They found that the best first meetings happened on bikes: a ride along the water, a stop for coffee, an easy way to end things if the chemistry was not there. One of those rides led to a dinner at home with three couples they now count as friends. Our guide on how couples meet other couples explains why that slow, small route works so well.
Seasons and where members travel
Amsterdam weather is a running joke. Winters are wet, windy and dark early, so social life moves into living rooms: long dinners, gezellig evenings with candles and good conversation. Spring arrives with King's Day on 27 April, when the whole city turns orange. Summer brings long light evenings on the canals and in the parks, and the easiest time to suggest a casual first drink.
Members here travel constantly, and the trains make it easy:
- Haarlem, Utrecht and The Hague, each well under an hour away.
- The North Sea beaches at Zandvoort and along the coast, for summer days.
- Antwerp and Brussels, a short train ride south.
- Berlin, Paris and London, a few hours by train or a short flight. See our guides to open-minded couples in Berlin and London.
- New York and Toronto, direct flights away, for transatlantic commuters.
If your year is split between Amsterdam and anywhere else, list every city.
Discretion and legal notes
Relationships between consenting adults are legal in the Netherlands, as across the EU, the UK, the US and Canada. Bigamy, meaning marrying more than one person, is illegal. This is general information, not legal advice; our piece on whether swinging is legal adds context.
Openness is not the same as being public, and the Dutch value privacy, protected across the EU by strong data rules. A few habits help:
- Use an alias and a separate Telegram or Signal account.
- Meet first somewhere neutral, away from your own street.
- Agree how to greet someone from the lifestyle at work or at the school gate: a normal hallo.
- No photos of anyone. At Rope & Candy nights there are no phones and no cameras.
How Rope & Candy works in Amsterdam
Rope & Candy has been a free, invite-only international community of open-minded couples and single women since 2018, active in North America and Europe. Nobody pays, nothing is sold, there are no tickets and there is no club venue.
When a founder or a Rope & Candy representative is in Amsterdam, we write to members here and suggest a coffee, a dinner or a small party among friends, hosted by members who know each other. If you would like to host a small night yourself one day, we share our way of doing it for free on the organize page.
Single women are very welcome. Our guide on meeting a couple as a single woman is a calm place to start.
Your next step
If Amsterdam is home, or a city you are in often, send us one email: an alias, whether you are a couple or a single woman, your ages, the cities where you live and travel, a Telegram or Signal contact and a few recent photos. There is no looks test, and nude photos are not required. When it feels right, join Rope & Candy, mention Amsterdam, and we will write when one of us is in town.
